23-year-old right arm off spinner Murvin Abinash became only the fifth Sri Lankan bowler to take eight or more wickets in an innings in a List A match when he took 8/53 for Burger Recreation Club (BRC) against Ace Capital Cricket Club in their Major Club Limited over Cricket tournament match which concluded at B.R.C. ground last week.
The former St John’s College, Jaffna cricketèr Abinash has also became the 16th cricketer in the world to capture 8 or more wickets in an innings in a List A match.
Ace Capital were restricted to 113 in 20.2 overs by B. R. C after making 143 from 41.5 overs in their Major League Limited Over Cricket tournament encounter which was dominated by bowlers of both sides. Abinash also beat his previous best figures of 5/27 for BRC against Kandy Customs Cricket Club at BRC which was also recorded in this season. Now he and Mithun Jayawickrama of Kandy Customs are the leading wicket takers in the ongoing Major League limited overs Cricket tournament with 22 wickets each from 9 matches and knocking on the door for a national call.
Former Sri Lanka speedster Chaminda Vaas was the first bowler to perform this feat when he took 8/19 including a hat-trick for Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe at Sinhalese Sports Club ground, Colombo in a L.G.Abans Triangular Series encounter in 2001/02 season. Zimbabwe were bowled out for just 38 in 15.4 overs and Sri Lanka reached the winning target easily in less than 5 overs. Vaas achieved this feat in 8 fiery overs including 3 maidens and in the process also pocketed the World record for the best bowling figure in an innings in a One Day International.
Right arm fast medium bowler Tharaka Kottehewa claimed 8/20 including two hat-tricks in the same innings for Nondescripts Cricket Club against Ragama Cricket Club in a Premier League Tournament match at Moors ground Colombo in 2007/08 season. In reply to N C C total of 200 Ragama were bowled out for 92 thanks mainly to Kottahewa who recorded the best ever figures by a Sri Lankan bowler in a domestic List A match.
In the same season left arm pacie Romesh Eranga captured 8/30 from 10 overs for BRC against Sri Lanka Army Sports Club in a Premier League Tier ‘B’ One day limited over match at Colts Ground in Colombo. Eranga, the right arm medium pacer has represented Canada in 9 Twenty/20 internationals from 2019-20.
Former National cricketer Sachithra Senanayaka was the next bowler to perform this feat when he took 8/27 for Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club against Panadura S.C at Welisara in 2022. After making 243 in 49.5 overs, Navy restricted Panadura for 136 in this encounter to record a 107 run victory. Senanayaka achieved a rare double by scoring 59 runs after opening the innings for Navy S.C.
