Transport, Highways and Mass Media, Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said that he agrees with the President’s decision to implement a project at the site of the Nuwara Eliya Post Office.

The Minister said that by relocating the Post Office to another location and using the area for a viable project would ensure new income avenues to the people in the area and employment opportunities and will also help boost tourism.

The Minister said this yesterday (7) while participating in the press conference held at the Government Information Department to inform Cabinet decisions. Responding to a question from a journalist the Minister further said.

“The Government has taken a decision not to sell any land to foreigners outright after the sale of the land near Galle Face to build the Shangri-La Hotel. However, the Government provides any available land on a lease basis for viable projects. As the Minister in charge, at any time, if investors come up with a proposal to build a Station Plaza near any railway station I will submit the proposal to the cabinet and obtain approval and appoint a committee for do it in a more transparent manner”.

The Minister said the Nuwara Eliya post office is in a dilapidated condition and is difficult to maintain and repair and proposal has been submitted to the President to use the place for an economically viable project.

“Getting investment is very important. How can we rejuvenate the country’s economy, if we don’t use available land and generate income from that land? Nuwara Eliya is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Especially Indian tourists show special attraction to the destination. Therefore, through the construction of a hotel, the income level of the people of that region will also be able to create employment opportunities. Therefore, as the Minister in charge of the subject, I do approve in relocating the Post Office to another place and give that place for the project”.
