Army assist as hospital staff go on strike

The Army was called into to maintain operations in several key Government hospitals across the country following the trade union action launched by hospital orderlies and administrative staff yesterday.

The Sri Lanka Army has deployed 615 soldiers and 19 officers to maintain the operations. Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage has instructed the Western and Central Security Force Commanders to deploy troops in the Colombo and Kandy National Hospitals, Kalubowila, Karapitiya, Mahamodara, Peradeniya, and Kurunegala Teaching Hospitals, and Matara, Balangoda, Eheliyagoda, Nawalapitiya, Badulla, Gampola, and Mirigama Hospitals.

Nearly 500 troops have been deployed to these hospitals, and additional personnel will be deployed in case of an emergency. Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage has requested the necessary measures be taken to ensure that the public can carry out their daily activities without any hindrance.
