August tourist tally tops 26,000 in first 4 days

Sri Lanka attracted 26,889 tourists from August 1 to 4, 2024 and has recorded 1,224,948 visitor arrivals so far.

The recently concluded cricket series between India and Sri Lanka has further helped to boost Indian arrivals while the introduction of IndiGo Airlines daily service from Chennai to Jaffna too will increase this segment.

In the first four days of August this year India was the biggest contributor with 3,922 arrivals accounting for 14.6% while the United Kingdom was second (3,350 – 12.5%) and China moved to be third (2,262 8.4%) source market for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s best arrival figure was made in 2018 where the country had 2,333,796 visitors and in 2023 this was at 1,487,303. Sri Lanka has also surpassed all the 2023 figures in each of 2024 by over 30% each month.

Top five markets in 2024 from January to date were India (229,563), Russian Federation (119,294) United Kingdom (113,539), Germany (82,419) and China (79,118). Tourism earnings today remain over USD 1.6 billion.
