CEA lauds citizens for disposing of e-waste at its collection centres

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has expressed its gratitude to people for disposing of used electrical and digital equipment at e-waste at collecting centres temporarily set up by the CEA in the Western, Southern, Northern and Uva Provinces.

The CEA established 97 e-waste collecting centres from four provinces in the country last month and has collected over 7,800 kgs of used electrical and digital equipment.

Some selected e-waste will be recycled in Sri Lanka to manufacture various goods while the remaining e-waste will be sent to other safe locations.

The recycled e-waste will be used to manufacture different types equipment or will be destroyed without causing any harm to the land and ocean environment.

Addressing a press briefing in Colombo, CEA Chairman Venura Fernando said this programme encouraged people to collect used plastic and polythene and many other items including CFL and tube bulbs, monitors, used mobile phones, fans, computers, laptop computers, fans, faxes machines, rice cookers and many other electronic and digital equipment without dumping them in the environment.
