A finance company awarded a contract to a vehicle Ceasar called Marcus Newton Kamalraj who is a resident of Thakkiya Road, Palagathurai, Kochchikade, Negombo to hijack a vehicle belonging to a man who could not pay his finance installments because of Covid. This incident happened even though President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa issued an order to immediately stop the hijacking of leased vehicles about a year ago. President Gotabhaya Rajapaksha took this decision as a person was killed in front of the finance company by the thugs of the aforementioned finance company.

Kamalraj tried to hijack the vehicle while the owner of the vehicle was traveling with his wife and 10-year-old son in a car on May 8. When the owner of the vehicle objected to hijack his vehicle, Kamalraj snatched the child of the vehicle owner and said that if the owner did not hand over the vehicle to them, they would strangle the child to death. The frightened vehicle owner and his wife handed over the vehicle to Kamalraj and immediately they went to the Negombo Police. The Negombo Police Crime Division was able to find and arrest Kamalraj and the manager of the finance company. Kamalraj is currently in remand custody and the manager of the finance company and three thugs were produced in court. The manager was granted bail.

Dayasiri Jayasekara, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party recently stated that the public is being robbed by the finance companies in this country and that he is ready to take to the streets with the public and raid those finance companies.
