Chinese Navy Hospital Ship Peace Ark strengthens bilateral ties between two nations – Minister Dr. Jayatissa
The Chinese Navy Hospital Ship Peace Ark is currently anchored at Colombo Port, providing free medical treatment and examinations to the people of Sri Lanka. Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa inspected the medical services offered by the ship on Wednesday (25).
The Peace Ark arrived in Sri Lanka on December 21 as part of the Chinese Government’s Mission Harmony – 2024 programme. It has been providing free healthcare services to Sri Lankan citizens and Chinese nationals residing in the country.
Minister Jayatissa expressed his appreciation for the healthcare services and humanitarian efforts offered by the hospital ship, emphasising that this initiative will strengthen bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and China. He also acknowledged the Chinese Government’s longstanding contributions to the development of health, education, the economy and social welfare in Sri Lanka.
The Peace Ark is equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, including operating rooms, intensive care units, ambulances, helicopters, and specialised medical services. It provides advanced diagnostic procedures such as CT scans, as well as traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture. The primary mission of the hospital ship is to deliver immediate humanitarian relief during emergencies worldwide. It has been serving this purpose since its construction by the People’s Republic of China in 2008.
Defence Deputy Minister (Retd) Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Health and Mass Media Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, the Commanders of the Tri-Forces, the Chief of Defence Staff, and other officials from the Health and Defence Ministries attended the event.
