Continuous rains render many homeless in Ampara district

Continuous rain over the last four days in the Ampara district in almost all the Divisional Secretariat areas has necessitated evacuation of many families to safer places. As heavy rains continue in these areas, many hundreds of houses are on the verge of being completely submerged.

According to Ampara District Secretary Chinthaka Abeywickrema, Akkaraipattu, Lahugala, Panama, Alayaivembu and Pottuvil Divisional Secretariat areas are the worst affected in the district. Those whose houses have been submerged have evacuated to safer places or their relatives’ houses. Divisional Secretaries have been instructed by the District Secretary to assess the damage caused to the houses and assist the home owners in whatever way possible. Shops in Akkaraipattu towns are closed due to flooding. Vehicles use the roads with great difficulty.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre of the district with the help of the Army, Police and Navy are engaged in rescue operations, evacuating people to safer areas. , 241 Infantry Brigade Commander Brigadier L.S.D.N. Pathiratna deployed his troops in the worst affected areas – Akkaraipattu, Addalaichenai and Alayadivembu to assist the affected people. 242 Infantry Brigade Commander Brigadier Kalana Amunupura and his troops are also engaged in rescue operations in Arugambay, Panama, Lahugala and Pottuvil.
