With the ongoing rains, dengue cases have increased by 10.5 percent, according to the National Dengue Control Programme. This spike occurred during the week from October 14 to 20, with 627 dengue cases reported from various locations across the country during this period.
Since the beginning of this year, a total of 41,591 dengue cases have been reported nationwide, along with 20 deaths. Of these cases, 42.5 percent or 17,686 have been reported from the Western Province.
The highest numbers were reported from the Colombo District (10,460), the Gampaha District (4,927), the Kalutara District (2,299). Additionally, 4,133 cases were reported from the Jaffna District, 3,585 from the Kandy District, 2,591 from the Ratnapura District, 1,665 from the Kurunegala District, and 1,872 from the Galle District.
Seven high-risk dengue zones have been identified, including the Colombo Municipal Council, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kelaniya, Ragama, Yatinuwara, and Wennappuwa. The Health Ministry advises that anyone with a fever lasting more than two days should seek medical attention from a qualified doctor, suspecting dengue. Maintaining cleanliness and eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds in the environment can help minimise the spread of dengue.
