EC complains to Police with intention of taking legal action

Election Commission (EC) Chairman R. M. A. L. Ratnayake said that the Commission has officially complained to the Police regarding candidates, political parties and independent groups who have not submitted expenditure reports for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections with documented proof, for them to proceed with taking legal action.

He said 13 political parties and independent groups have not submitted income and expenditure reports for the 2024 Presidential Election.

The EC Chairman said this during a media briefing held at the Government Information Department on Monday (03) themed ‘Registration Day for voters’ which falls on February 01 of every year.

The EC Chairman said that 1,064 candidates have also not submitted their income and expenditure reports for the 2024 Parliamentary Election.

Ratnayake further said that the Election Commission has officially complained to the Police regarding these violations with their individual files submitted to the Police for them to proceed with taking legal action against the relevant candidates, political parties and independent groups.

Meanwhile, Additional Election Commissioner Rasika Peiris said that the Election Commission’s objective is to prepare the electoral roll in such a way so that eligible voters will not miss being on the voters’ list.

During the media briefing held yesterday regarding the inclusion of citizens’ names in the voters’ list, the EC Chairman said that the address where they reside will be included in the electoral roll on February 1 every year.

The Additional Election Commissioner further said that steps will be taken to include the names of citizens who have reached the age of 18 on February 01 in the main electoral roll.
