The All Ceylon Poultry Traders Association (ACPTA) assured that the egg prices will not be increased during the Christmas and New Year season.
He said enough eggs are currently being produced by poultry farms countrywide and there will be no shortage of eggs in the market.
ACPTA President Ajith Gunasekara said although egg prices in the local market had drastically gone up a few months ago, the situation has changed since traditional poultry farmers who closed down their farms due to egg imports recently re-started the farms, soon after the Government’s decision to stop egg imports.
He said it was not a suitable decision taken by authorities earlier to import eggs at the time the local poultry farms were able to produce high quality eggs at reasonable rates.
Gunasekara further said unlike earlier, many new poultry famers have started to breed chicks since poultry feed is now freely available in the market, but requested authorities to give a further price reduction.
He also said that nearly 60,000 small and medium scale poultry farmers are currently in the country and if egg are imported, it would be a threat to not only to consumers but also to existing poultry farmers as well as their families.
Gunasekara said it is the duty of responsible officials to encourage poultry farmers to start new ventures since the country has adequate resources including land and water.
