Egypt played a pivotal role in NAM – Education Minister

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the Egypt played a pivotal role in the Non Alignment Movement (NAM) and relations between Sri Lanka and Egypt goes back to many centuries even though the formal diplomatic relations started in 1957.

The Minister was speaking at a reception hosted by the Egyptian Embassy in Colombo to mark the 72nd Anniversary of the National Day held in Colombo on Monday (22).

The Minister said that former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser who was the driving force behind the Non Alignment Movement played a pivotal role in strengthening the relations between Sri Lanka and Egypt.

Egypt’s Ambassador Maged Mosleh said that the two countries are enjoying close and cordial relations for decades.

He said that Egypt considers Sri Lanka as one of its closest friends. The ambassador said that a number of projects have been implemented by the embassy for the uplift of vulnerable sectors in the society. Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, State Minister Tharaka Balasuriya, MPs Rauff Hakeem, Prof. G. L. Peiris, Jamiyyathul Ulama President Sheikh M. I. M. Rizwie Mufthi and members of the diplomatic corps based in Colombo were present.
