Examination Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara said the Examinations Department will adopt a semi-automated system in the preparation of examination papers aiming to reduce examination frauds such as leakage of examination papers.

When using a semi-automated system, the preparation of the examination papers will be done through a computerised system, which minimises the contribution of the individual in the preparation of the examination papers.

Jayasundara also stated that such a semi-automated question paper preparation system will reduce the probability of examination related frauds up to certain extent.

“There is a possibility of reducing fraud and corruption under this new system, which is going to be implemented,” he added. He also said that with the implementation of new education reforms, the process of preparation of question papers is facing a big transformation and as a result these new methods will be adopted to maintain the standard of all exams.

However he noted that it is not possible to avoid 100 percent fraud and corruption due to personal involvement in the preparation of examination papers.

Speaking on the recent question paper leak of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination 2024, he stated that it is related to the confidence of individuals, who are involved in the process of question paper preparation.

“The issue of question paper leak in the past was not a problem in the mechanism of the Sri Lanka Examinations Department but a problem related to the confidence of individuals,” he added.

According to the provisions of the Public Examinations Act No. 25 of 1968 and the provisions of the Penal Code, punishment is meted out to persons involved in examination fraud. He said that the Public Examinations Act, allows for arrests without a warrant under the criminal law.
