Farmers to get Rs. 100,000 per hectare for total flood crop damage

Agriculture and Livestock Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne announced that farmers will receive compensation of Rs.100,000 per hectare for total crop losses caused by recent floods.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that the relevant circular will be implemented and assured farmers that there is no reason for doubt. Speaking to the media during an event in Kurunegala yesterday (8), the Deputy Minister revealed that compensation will be provided based on the assessed level of damage: 100% of the assessed value for complete losses, 60% for partial losses, and 40% for minor damages.

He further clarified that farmers will receive Rs.40,000 as compensation for damages to an acre of paddy fields.Once damage assessments are completed, compensation payments will be promptly disbursed to the affected farmers.

The Deputy Minister also addressed delays in distributing fertiliser subsidies in certain areas, stating that these obstacles have been identified and are being addressed. Currently, over 800,000 hectares of paddy fields have been cultivated, and all farmers will receive the Rs.25,000 fertiliser subsidy.

He added:”We have a clear understanding of farmers’ needs. Although we have only held these responsibilities for a short time, we are not avoiding the challenges.We are committed to providing both immediate and long-term solutions within the existing framework. Any necessary changes to the system will be made gradually and systematically.”
