The Government has allocated Rs.1 billion for crop damage caused by floods due to the recent adverse weather conditions.
Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board Chairman Pemasiri Jasingha Arachchi said that releasing crop damage compensation will commence from Manampitiya in Polonnaruwa from today (2).
According to the current information, about 375,000 acres of farmland have been destroyed with the heavy rains and the crops of 175,000 farmers have been damaged.
The chairman also said that the government will implement a special programme to replant the fields damaged by the floods.
Jasingha Arachchi said that compensation of Rs.40,000 per acre of paddy will be given and not only paddy cultivation but also compensation will be given to corn, potato, soya bean, onion and chilli crop farmers if they have been damaged due to floods.
He said about 50,000 acres of paddy in Batticaloa district, 10,000 acres of paddy in Polonnaruwa district, 10,000 acres of paddy in Trincomalee district, 7,000 acres of paddy in Ampara and 8,000 acres of paddy in Vavuniya district has been destroyed.
