The Government is focusing on passing new legislation to raise the fines imposed on persons found guilty of killing dairy cows to Rs. 1 million.

Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that while the liquid milk industry is redeveloping, the slaughter of dairy cows is also increasing rapidly and it has been decided to bring amendment to the laws to increase fines in order to mitigate the situation.

Speaking to the media in Kandy, he said that the problem cannot be solved without imposing harsher punishments by amending the current laws related to killing dairy cows.

He emphasized that in addition to harsher fines and imprisonment, the person or persons involved in the crime will be revealed publicly in order to deter people from committing such offences.
