Nairobi, Kenya – High Commissioner (HC) Kana Kananathan attended the prestigious launch of the African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson candidate, Raila Odinga. The event, hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto, took place at the State House Kenya and was graced by the presence of three African Heads of State Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan along with former Head of State of Nigeria emphasizing the significance of this candidacy for the continent’s future.

HC Kananathan, representing Sri Lanka, expressed his honour in witnessing such a pivotal moment in Africa’s diplomatic and political landscape. He commended Raila Odinga for his unwavering commitment to pan-Africanism and his vision for a stronger, united Africa.

The African Union (AU) is a continental body comprising 55 member states that make up the countries of the African continent. Established in 2002, the AU succeeded the Organization of African Unity (OAU) with the aim of driving greater political and economic integration among African nations. The AU plays a crucial role in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and promoting sustainable development across the continent. The AU Commission, its executive branch, is tasked with implementing the AU’s policies and coordinating its activities.

Raila Odinga is a prominent Kenyan politician with a distinguished career spanning several decades. He has served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013 and has been a key figure in the country’s political landscape. Known for his strong advocacy for democracy, social justice, and pan-Africanism, Odinga has also played a significant role in regional peace efforts, particularly in mediating conflicts within the East African region. His candidacy for the AU Commission Chairpersonship is seen as a testament to his enduring influence and commitment to the continent’s progress.
