Heat advisory issued on eight districts today by Met Dept

The Meteorology Department has issued a warning about hot weather conditions for eight districts with the heat index that could increase up to 39-45 ‘Caution’ level today (23).

Based on the Heat Index Advisory issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, the heat felt by the human body at some places in the North-Western and North-Central provinces and Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts is expected to increase to a ‘Caution’ level where fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity and continued activity could result in heat cramps that requires special attention.

The Meteorological Department advised that people should drink adequate water and stay as much as possible in shaded areas of open work sites.

Attention should be paid especially to the elderly and sick persons living inside homes and also to ensure not to keep children alone inside closed vehicles. The Meteorological Department also advised to wear white or light coloured clothing whenever possible.
