Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday urged the Speaker to call a three-day debate on the statement made by the Central Bank (CB) Governor that any Government that comes to power will have no alternative other than to follow the programme agreed to with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Minister Dr. Gunawardhana said that the statement made by the CB Governor that no other programme can be implemented except the programme agreed to with the IMF is a very important statement as the all Public Finances will be under the total control of Parliament.
Therefore, it is extremely important to build a broad national dialogue in this regard, the Minister said, requesting the Speaker to hold a three-day debate on this statement with the approval of all MPs.
Accordingly, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that attention will be paid to the request made by Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana in the Party Leaders’ meeting.
He stated this while expressing his views regarding a question made by Chief Opposition Whip MP Lakshman Kiriella yesterday in Parliament.
