“How did Gammanpila get Easter attacks’ reports?”

There are serious concerns regarding the transparency of the process by which certain reports, particularly those related to the Easter Sunday attacks, ended up in the possession of Udaya Gammanpila, attorney-at-law Manoj Nanayakkara said yesterday.

Nanayakkara said, “These reports are not just ordinary documents, but involve critical details about the lives of people affected by the Easter Sunday attacks. The integrity of the committee tasked with investigating these events is now in question.

“At no point have we exploited the grief of the Easter attacks’ victims. Our primary goal has always been to seek answers. However, there are multiple factions opposed to the discovery of these answers. Two key groups which seem to resist the truth are those responsible for the Easter attacks and those who have gained various benefits or privileges in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“This Government came to power on the promise of uncovering the truth behind the Easter Sunday attacks. So, we have no intention of allowing this issue to be reduced to a mere policy statement in another government’s agenda.”

“Some individuals have raised concerns about the appointment of Shani Abeysekara, claiming it was a political move. However, Shani is not someone who has ever engaged in politics while serving in his official capacity. He is a distinguished officer who uncovered many serious crimes in this country. He later became a victim of political vendettas and was unjustly imprisoned for 10 months. If he is qualified to lead efforts in preventing crime, what is wrong with utilising his expertise? His capabilities far exceed those of others who criticise from the sidelines.

“When we met with the IGP, we asked whether Deshabandu Tennakoon had truly achieved as much as was claimed. However, we did not receive a clear answer. What we believe is that he has left the Police administration in disarray.”
