Lankan seafarers to train in Peter Dooley Naval Institute, Germany

Peter Dooley Naval Institute in Germany has expressed their willingness to provide technical training to Sri Lankan seafarers.

The training manager of the German institution, Rainer Sterk, who met the Minister of Port and Shipping Nimal Siripala de Silva at the minister’s office said that they are keen to assist the skill development of local aspiring seafarers.Stark said at present, the Peter Doehle Naval Institute provides its technical training to seafarers in many countries including the Philippines.

“We have already trained 15 Sri Lankan youth as merchant marine cadets jointly with the Central Marine Institute of Sri Lanka. Now we want to expand this network,”he said. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva requested the German institution to prepare a program in the future towards training of ‘merchant mariners’ jointly with Mahapola Maritime Academy Stark, who responded positively to the minister’s request, told the minister that he would discuss with the top management of the Peter Dooley Institute and prepare an urgent program.

This discussion was attended by Gayan Algewatte, Acting Chairman of Port Authority, Kalinga De Silva, Managing Director of Central Marine Institute and Patali Karunaratne, consultant of the institution.
