Legal action against candidates who didn’t submit income, expenditure reports – EC
Election Commission Chairman (EC) R.M.A.L.Rathnayake said that according to Section 08 A of the Income and Expenditure Act No. 03, 2023, legal action will be taken against the candidates from political parties, political parties, candidates from independent groups and independent groups and candidates from the national lists who failed to submit their election income and expenditure reports by midnight yesterday (6).
The deadline to handover election income and expenditure reports of the candidates who contested the recent Parliamentary election ended at midnight yesterday (06) and the deadline will not be extended. No reports that are submitted after the deadline will be accepted.
The EC Chairman making a special statement to the media said that candidates who contested from political parties, independent groups and candidates from the national lists who have failed to submit their election income and expenditure reports were required to submit them before midnight yesterday to the Election Secretariat office in Colombo and to all the district returning officers.
The Chairman of the EC said that out of the 8,361 candidates who contested the General election, only 1,985 have submitted their income expenditure reports so far. He said that only 106 political parties and independent groups out of a total of 690 have so far submitted the income expenditure reports of their candidates.
Out of the 527 candidates included in the national lists, only 57 have submitted their reports, the EC Chairman further said.The EC Chairman said that all the candidates who handed in their nominations besides those who got selected to the Parliament are required to handover their election income and expenditure reports.
Candidates who fail to submit their reports who will face court cases as a result may not be able to contest the upcoming local government or the provincial council elections, the EC Chairman said.
