Examinations Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara noted that it was decided not to re-conduct the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, but to offer free marks to all students for the three questions which were alleged to have been leaked.

He was speaking at a press conference at the Examinations Department yesterday.

Jayasundara added that the evaluation of answer sheets, which had been temporarily suspended until reaching a firm decision on the re-conducting of the examination, is expected to commence immediately.

He said that only three questions of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination 2024 were reportedly leaked. Several committees were appointed to investigate the matter. According to the final conclusion of those committees, only three questions had been leaked prior to the examination.

Jayasundara said the Examinations Department conducted a preliminary investigation on September 20 and it was alleged that three questions of Question Paper 1 had been leaked. Later, the initial investigation report was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which also launched a separate investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, the paper marking process of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, which was held on September 15, had been temporarily suspended, pending the investigation on the advice of the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Planning Division of the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Maharagama and a school teacher, who were arrested by the CID over the question paper leak, were remanded until October 22. It was reported that the arrested NIE Director was a member of the committee which prepared the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination paper, and the suspect teacher had been conducting tuition classes for Grade 5 students.

The Scholarship Examination 2024 was held on September 15 at 2,849 examination centers across the island, with 323,879 candidates sitting for it.
