During an era when animals such as monkeys and peacocks cause damage to cultivations and crops, a student from Maththumagala Welisara, Bauddha Maha Vidyalaya has come up with an excellent solution.
He is Lithula Thevusara De Silva, studying in the English medium in Grade 10 of the school. Lithula who had a special talent from his younger days to invent new things has made this device.
This device which consists of four parts includes an alarm which indicates that animals have entered the cultivation and an ultra sound system is used to chase away those animals.
In addition, the part that can be fixed on the borders of the cultivated land, has been made so that it can emit the gas ammonia and it succeeds in chasing away the animals while nitrogen which is released from this device is a very beneficial nutrient to the cultivation, according to Lithula Thevusara De Silva, the creator of the device.
He said further that he hopes to obtain a patent for his invention. Lithula said that he received assistance for his new invention from the school Principal Nijamalie Palika and the teaching staff.
Minister of Science and Technology Krishantha Abeysena who came to observe this new invention said that all possible steps to further develop this device at the level of the Ministry of Science and Technology will be taken.
He also said that he hopes to act in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture concerning this device.
The Minister also stated that it is hoped to commercialise many of these new products that have been developed, through a special programme initiated in collaboration with the Presidential Secretariat, and that the Government has planned to provide special support for research-level new products that have been stalled.
