Melwire Rolling clinches Mercantile ‘D’ Cricket title

Melwire Rolling (Pvt) Ltd., led by 35-year-old veteran, Mahendran Seshankumar bagged their very first Mercantile Cricket title, the 4th Ceylon Biscuits Ltd.,sponsored, “CBL-Munchee” Trophy – MCA “D” division 40 Over League Tournament on Saturday.

In the Final concluded at the MCA Grounds Melwire Rolling recorded thrilling one wicket win over Nations Trust Bank (NTB) PLC “A”.

The match was dominated by bowlers, where 19 wickets fell for a mere 242 runs in 74 overs.

NTB who won the toss and opted to bat was restricted to 121 runs in 39.2 overs by Melwire Rolling’s varied bowling attack of Malinda Perera who took 2 for 12 in 8 over spell. Sachin Senanayake 3 for 28 Aravinth Rajendran 2 for 26 and Jason Charles 2 for 11 took bowling honours for Melwire.

Melwire Rolling chasing an easy target of 122 runs in 40 Overs lost one of their openers, Pasindu Sasanka for duck had a poor start but number 3 batsman, Sanesh Nadeeshan (50 in 80 balls, inclusive of 06 fours), who anchored the batting, was engaged in two partnerships, 47 runs in 59 balls for the second wicket with Lester Jayaweera (24) and 41 runs in 74 balls for the 6th wicket with Ishan Hansika (15) build up their total.

NTB’s opening bowler, Madushan Chathuranga 5 for 31 in 8 overs spell turned the match upside down by getting rid of Sanesh Nadeeshan and Skipper, Mahendran Seshan Kumar, as Melwire Rolling slid to 113 for 9 in 32 overs and match was wide open at that time. However Melwire last pair, Malinda Perera and Sachin Senanayake hung on grimly, as they took them over the line, 122 for 9 in 34.2 overs to clinch the title.

Sanesh Nadeeshan from Melwire Rolling was adjudged as the Man of the Match.

The other three special awards went to Madushan Chathuranga from NTB “A” .

Best Bowler, (performance up to the Final 07 matches, 187 runs, 19 wickets), Nadun Pathirana from NTB “A”, Best Batsman ( performance up to the final: 07 innings 281 runs , inclusive of 01 century and 2 half centuries) Lakshina Rodrigo from Hayleys Group “B”, Man of the Series (performance up to the semi finals 7 matches, 209 runs, 18 dismissals behind the stumps, also bagged 4 for 23.

Kushani Peiris, General Manager, Ceylon Biscuits Limited was the chief guest at the award ceremony and MCA President, Mahesh de Alwis, MCA General Secretary, Rohan Somawansa and MCA Chairman Tournament Committee, Lakshan de Silva were also present.
