As a team we can’t be satisfied the way we played against Afghanistan said Sri Lankan spin specialist coach Piyal Wijetunga after losing Afghanistan game in Pune on Monday.
I never talk about the result and it can go either way but our playing style was not enough to get success and we have to think twice said former Sri Lanka test spinner and long time Spin specialist coach of the National team. At one stage we were 150 for 3 wickets and we should have got 300 or 320 runs on this Pune wicket. But middle order collapse saw Sri Lanka being restricted to 241 and opponents reached that target with four overs to spare despite a seventh wicket stand of 45 runs between Maheesh Theekshana and Angelo Matthews. On that Indian wicket any team can get 300-320 runs but our middle order batsmen led down the side he said
The spin coach further said we plan match by match and according to venue and wicket we make our plans. When we came to Pune we made plans. We can make plans but the players must execute the plans in the middle and as Coaches we can’t do more for the players and only we can give back up. Players should execute their plans to reach their target .Whatever plans we have most important is did we play according to the plan and how we executed the match plan and these are the areas to focus more added Spin coach Wijetunga a product of St Anthony’s Katugastota.
After this defeat can we develop our mentality to play well in next three matches ? This is nature of cricket and we must learn from.our mistakes and should rectify them before next three matches .What type of areas to build up and what type of mistakes we have made and plan match by match and players should realize their responsibility and they have to go forward with confidence said Piyal Wijetunga. Here in Pune Sri Lanka spectators were disappointed with this unexpected defeat.
Meanwhile Afghanistan head Cricket coach Jonathan Trott said our players played according to plan. We knew Sri Lanka is a strong team and they had experienced players. But I always said play with more confidence and go in a positive mood and it will bring success . Recently we had good records In .Asia Cup we played good cricket but couldn’t reach the final .Sometimes we knew our players put in their best effort to get success ..We had to decide whether to bat first or second and it was a good toss to win .We knew the weather pattern here in Pune and our players were hard at training and this brought success said the former England cricketer .
myself and my staff made good effort while players had commitment and adopted a positive approach to win this gene with four overs to spare said Jonathan Trott who is the man behind their success.
We already won three world cup games and looking forward to do well and players commitment dedication and good support from management contributed to our success said Afghanistan head coach.
