Pilgrims stranded at Somawathi Raja Maha Viharaya premises due to floods

The road leading to the Somawathi Raja Maha Viharaya in Polonnaruwa has been flooded, causing disruption to vehicular movement, according to Police. Meanwhile around 100 pilgrims were stranded at Somawathi Raja Maha Viharaya premises due to the flooding.

Later the Maha Sangha at the temple with the help of the Police had taken steps to transport the group of pilgrims using alternative routes.

The flooding has occurred due to the rising river water levels, caused by heavy rainfall that prevailed since Sunday. As a result, traffic movement along the route has been completely disrupted.

Police have deployed officers for the protection of pilgrims.
