President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed a Commission chaired by retired Chief Justice, President’s Counsel Priyasath Dep, to amend the election law to suit the needs of society while strengthening democracy. The special gazette announcement related to this has been announced by the President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake on October 16. Sundaram Arumainayagam, Senanayake Alisandralage, Nalin Jayantha Abeysekera, Rajitha Navin Senaratne, Ahmed Mohamed Saleem, Sagarika Delgoda, Nimalka Fernando and Deepani Samantha Rodrigo are the other members of this Commission. Preparing a suitable electoral system with proportional representation and single system, increasing the representation of women and youth, using new technology to vote, making
arrangements for Sri Lankans living abroad to vote, giving space to a single person to represent Parliament and the Provincial Council, the provision of postal voting rights to non-government employees are tasks that have been assigned to be inquired into by the Commission.
This Commission has been appointed to conduct investigations and submit a report to President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake within six months.
