Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe commenting on the political developments taking place in South Korea, yesterday commended the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea for swift and unified action taken to resist the rule by Martial Law.

Wickremesingh, in a statement yesterday, said that President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of Martial Law threatened the democratic system in the Republic of Korea.

“The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea must be commended for the swift and unified action taken to resist the rule by Martial Law”, the statement said.

“The unity shown by the Parliament both from the Opposition and those supporting the administration is certainly worthy of international recognition”, he said. “This shows the strength of Parliament under an Executive Presidency. It is in the interest of Republic of Korea to resolve this Constitutional crisis peacefully”, the statement said.
