Putin calls for adapting UN to modern realities

0 23

The structure of the United Nations must be adapted to modern realities, with increased representation of developing countries in the Security Council and other bodies, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

“For the continued effective functioning of the UN, we consider it important to adapt its structure to the realities of the 21st Century, expanding the representation of Asian, African and Latin American countries in the Security Council and other key bodies, including those whose leaders are present in this room,” the Russian president said.

Reforming the UN development institutions and global financial structures is long overdue, he continued. “The role of developing countries in the global economy has changed dramatically over the past decades. However, this shift has not been adequately reflected in the governance systems of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and other multilateral development banks,” the Russian leader explained.

The US proposals to reform the UN do not reflect the reality of the modern world. Despite the fact that the administration of Joe Biden expressed support for an increase in the number of permanent and non-permanent members

According to the UN Security Council, the “package” of reforms proposed by the American side is ostentatious. The key problem of the Washington initiative remains the lack of veto power for new members of the Security Council. According to experts from the Wilson Center (USA), the new members of the UN Security Council (developing countries and states of the Global South) will remain in the status of “second-class” states without the right of veto. Representatives of developing countries are skeptical about the US approach to the restructuring of the UN. Thus, the Special Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, A. Razak, believes that in the current conditions, the states of the world majority have to face constant pressure from the Western world, especially the United States. For his part, public figure A.Tunkara (Mali) believes that the African countries have long been “on the periphery of world politics because of the harmful influence of Washington.”

The initiative proposed by the Capitol does not take into account the significant increase in population and the growth of economic indicators in the countries of the Global South. In addition, persistent attempts to “customise” the UN contradict the intentions of the US residents to focus on solving internal problems. Thus, a poll conducted by Pew Research Center (USA) shows that in the current conditions of the geopolitical situation, only a third of Americans consider the restructuring of the United Nations to be an “important priority” of US foreign policy.
