Reckless driving kills three in Hatton bus tragedy

Preliminary investigations have revealed, the tragic bus accident in the Malliappuwa area of Hatton on Saturday which claimed the lives of three individuals and injured 52 others was due to reckless driving, Hatton Division Police Superintendent Pradeep Weerasekara stated.

The private bus, travelling from Hatton to Kandy on Saturday, veered off the road near the Malliappuwa Police Station and overturned. Three passengers were killed on the spot, while the injured were rushed to the Dickoya Base Hospital with the help of Hatton Police officers and local residents.

Hospital sources confirmed that among the injured, seven individuals in critical condition were transferred to the Kandy Teaching Hospital for further treatment. The deceased include a 12-year-old child, a 57-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman.

According to SP Weerasekara, preliminary investigations indicate the accident occurred due to reckless driving. The driver reportedly lost control while attempting to shut an open door near the driver’s seat, leading to the bus overturning. The driver has been taken into custody and is receiving medical treatment. Authorities have ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to ensure legal action is taken.
