Russian Embassy in Colombo yesterday announced the donation of over 55,000 MT of potassium chloride fertiliser to boost the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka. The consignment is to be handed over to the Sri Lankan officials at a ceremony to be held at the Colombo Port premises under the patronage of Russian Envoy in Colombo Levan Dzhagaryan.
This donation produced by Russia’s Uralchem Group, aims to support Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector and strengthen food security, the embassy statement said.
“The consignment, part of over 260,000 Metric Tonnes of fertiliser that has been stranded in Europe since early 2022, will arrive at the Colombo Port on December 12, 2024”, the statement said.
The embassy said that this donation highlights the strong bilateral ties between Russia and Sri Lanka and Russia’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid during critical times.
“This initiative underlines Russia’s dedication to fostering global solidarity and assisting countries in overcoming economic and agricultural challenges which also showcase the continued collaboration between the two nations”.
Fifty percent of the consignment will be distributed among paddy farmers and other crop cultivations and the remaining 50 percent of fertiliser will be distributed among coconut farmers.
