A special discussion was held in the Matara District Secretariat auditorium under the chairmanship of the Matara District Secretary Y. Wickramasiri regarding the flood situation in the vicinity of Matara City and the short-term solutions to be taken to speed up the drainage of the low-lying areas due to the bad weather conditions affecting the Matara district.

The Matara City and area canals and culverts clogged with water.
A number of issues were identified including blockages of roads for water drainage, blockage of canals, lack of formal maintenance, construction of low-lying houses, informal drainage systems, unauthorized constructions, and accordingly cleaning of canals in non-draining areas and not harming people’s lives.
Matara Additional District Secretary Kasun Wellaheva, Disaster Management Coordination Unit Assistant Director Lt. Col. Ariyawansa Kandambi, Irrigation Department, Agricultural Development Department, Road Development Authority, Water Supply Board, village officials, representatives of farmers’ organisations and local community participated.
