Shubhanshu Shukla is set to create history as the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft from the space station in Florida, later this year.
He will pilot the Axiom Mission 4. The mission is part of a joint effort between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the US space agency announced on Thursday.
In an X post, NASA Space Operations wrote, “NASA and its international partners have approved the crew for Axiom Space’s fourth private astronaut mission to the International Space Station, launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida no earlier than spring 2025.”
“Peggy Whitson, former NASA astronaut and director of human spaceflight at Axiom Space, will command the commercial mission, while Indian Space Research Organization astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla will serve as pilot,” it added.
Addressing a webinar on Thursday, Shukla said he was “really excited to go into microgravity” as the pilot for the Axiom Mission 4 to the International Space Station. He also said he would try to perform some yoga postures on the ISS.
