For the first time in the history Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation (SLTF) will conduct an International Taekwondo Championship at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo which will commence today.
The opening ceremony will be held at 4.00 p.m. and the meet will conclude on December 12.
Nearly 100 officials including competitors from eight South Asian countries and several Asian countries are expected to participate and this is going to be good exposures and great opportunity for Sri Lankan Taekwondo players said Secretary of the SLTF. Sri Lankan Taekwondo players won four gold medals at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu and also bagged 7 silver and 16 bronze at this same meet. There are very few opportunities for Sri Lankan Taekwondo players to get International exposure and this time this International meet will pave a good platform for all.
The international Taekwondo officials, referees and foreign players inclusion give tourist promotion for Sri Lanka. This type of International tournaments will boost country’s sports tourism.
In addition, for the first time in the history Taekwondo international conference will be held in Sri Lanka and all leading officials are expected to take part at this conference. The Conference will be held at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo on December 8. Dr Chungwon Choue the President of World Taekwondo Federation will grace this occasion while Sports Minister Harin Fernando will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony today. Korean Ambassador in Sri Lanka Miyon Lee and State Minister of Sports Rohana Dissanayake, Secretary to the Sports Ministry K. Mahesan and Sports Director General Dr Shemal Fernando are also invited as special guests.
The SLTF has taken steps to hold three International Taekwondo events and one International Conference from December 7-12 during this tournament.
The GCS International Open Championship and the Asian International Open Championship will be held from December 7-8 and the first South Asian Open Taekwondo Championship will be held on December 11-12.
