0 109

Sri Lanka yesterday remembered the thousands of people who lost their lives to the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami that swept the island in 2004, killing over 35,000 people.

In conjunction with National Safety Day, the national programme to commemorate and offer merit to the dead and those declared missing in the tsunami, held in front of Thelwatta Peraliya Tsunami Memorial, was held with the participation of Military and Police leaders, state officials and the public. The engine of the train which overturned in the tsunami at Peraliya, causing the death of more than 1,700, was driven from Colombo Fort to Peraliya yesterday, and prayers were held here for the victims.

The Disaster Management Centre maintained a two-minute silence at 9.25 am yesterday, which has also been named ‘National Safety Day’. Various programmes were held in many parts of the island in memory of those who lost their lives in the tsunami and those who went missing.
