Health Ministry Secretary Dr.Palitha Mahipala said Sri Lanka and Thailand are at the forefront of the Asian region in providing treatment for dengue patients and reducing deaths.
He said that the dengue death rate in Sri Lanka is six per 1,000 patients and compared to the dengue death rate in the Asian region, this is a very good situation in minimising deaths.
The Secretary said this in a meeting held recently at the Central Province Governor’s office chaired by Health Minister Ramesh Pathirana and Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage.
Dr. Mahipala Herath said that the World Health Organization has announced that about 5 million people in the world have been infected with dengue and 5,000 of them have died and because of this they have identified it as a dangerous situation.
He stated that a multi-purpose approach is needed to reduce dengue cases and the line ministry is constantly working to provide necessary technical support for activities including the destruction of mosquito breeding places.
