In a heroic act, a 15-year-old boy risked his life to save a young child from a well in the village of Kivula, Mahakumbukkadawala, Puttalam.
The incident occurred when a four-year-old boy from Kivula No. 4 fell into a well, struggling between life and death. The young hero, identified as Sasidu Nimsara, a Grade 10 student at Kivula Pirivena, noticed the child in distress and sprang into action.
According to villagers, Sasidu saw the child struggling in the water and immediately jumped into the well to rescue him. The child had been playing and was supposed to return home but did not, prompting a search by concerned family members. Upon reaching the well, Sasidu saw the water churning and the child surfacing, prompting his brave leap to save the child.
Villagers reported that without Sasidu’s intervention, the child would not have survived. The well, over 36 feet deep, had its protective sidewalls collapse during recent heavy rains. The young boy, accustomed to visiting Sasidu’s home frequently, found himself in a dire situation, which Sasidu addressed without hesitation.
Throughout the country, incidents of children falling into unsafe areas are reported frequently, often leading to tragic outcomes. In this context, Sasidu’s courageous act stands out as a beacon of hope and bravery.
Recalling the event, Sasidu said, “I was feeding the little one when he said he was going home. After washing the plates in the kitchen, I heard him call out ‘Sasidu Aiya’ and I knew something was wrong. I ran to the well, saw the water splashing, and without thinking, I jumped in and grabbed him. We held onto a pipe, and I shouted for help. His mother and others came, and we were pulled out.”
The mother of the four-year-old Akash Nethumina, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I heard Sasidu shouting and ran outside. Seeing him in the well holding my son was unbelievable. Together with others, we managed to pull them both out. What Sasidu did was beyond heroic.”
Sasidu’s mother added, “It’s hard to believe. Anyone would think twice before jumping into a 36-foot deep well. We are proud of him for saving the little one without thinking about his own safety.”
