Professor Malik Peiris, one of the world’s foremost scientists, has warned that the next two weeks will be crucial for Sri Lanka as the Delta strain is found in a large number of infected COVID-19 patients.
He has stated this while commenting on the BBC Sinhala service. He noted that only about 20% of people in Sri Lanka have yet received the COVID-19 vaccine and that the situation could worsen if the Delta variety spreads rapidly in such a context.
The Professor further pointed out that the first thing Sri Lanka should do is to vaccinate people over 60 years of age.
