Girls’ High School, Kandy won two chess championships in the All Ceylon School Sports Tournament. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, Girls’ High School won the under-20 and under-17 championships held recently at Natthandia Dhammissara College, and this was the third consecutive time that they won the under-20 championship. BPR Premanath was picked as the best player of the tournament.
Kandy Girls’ High School Under-20 Chess Team comprised B.P.R.Premanath, G.D.C.V., Potthewela, M.M.W.H. Mapa, K. Kirutika, D. T. T. Kumarasinghe, W. M. M. N. Wijesinghe, CD Marasinghe, while the Under 17 team consisted of S. Sashruta, Y. M.S.A.Y. Bandara, SPSV Saparamdu, NP Maddumage, NV Rajakaruna, RP Adhikari and GR Dange. They were trained by H.M.Farzan with Mrs. H.Amunugama as the teacher in charge.
