Upward trend of tourism sector continues for fourth month in succession

The upward momentum in the Sri Lanka tourism sector continued for the fourth month in succession. Sri Lanka passed the 200,000 arrival mark at the end of March as well. The total number of tourists that visited Sri Lanka from January 1 to March 27 was 608,475.

As of March 27, 2023, Sri Lanka recorded 181,872 arrivals and with an average of 7,000 arrivals per day, this figure was expected to pass the 200,000 mark in March as well. In 2023 March Sri Lanka attracted 125,495.

In January 2024, Sri Lanka saw 208,253 and in February this figure increased to 218,350. In both January and February 2024, it saw a 100% growth over the 2023 corresponding months.

With the Russian winter subscribing India beat Russia to be the top source destination for Sri Lanka with 28,218 arrivals and accounting for 16% of the market while Russian Federation with 25,112 and Germany with 16,745 were second and third. The United Kingdom was fourth at 16,649 while China bounced back as a top source tourism destination for Sri Lanka became the fifth and pushed back France (11,220) to sixth place. The top three source markets for Sri Lanka from January 1 to March 27, 2024, India (92,644) Russian Federation (88,301) and the United Kingdom (53,928).
