Viren to face Siddhant in India International Badminton Challenge

Sri Lankan shuttler Viren Nettasinghe will face Siddhant Salar in the first-round of the CM Trophy India International Challenge Badminton Championship, which began yesterday in Rajpur Chhattisgarh, India.

The 20-year-old seeded at the top in men’s singles category, is expected to play his first main draw match today, following the qualifying rounds held yesterday in Raipur.

Viren Nettasinghe who was world-ranked 80th before this Indian tour, has now improved to the 74th position after a successful India International Challenge Badminton Championship concluded at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore last week.

This achievement places Viren alongside Niluka Karunaratne, marking him as the first Sri Lanka player to attain a world ranking below 100 at such a young age. while Niluka accomplished this feat at the age of 28.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Aashinsa Herath from Royal College was unable to take part in the men’s qualifying round due to illness. However, two more Sri Lanka shuttlers arrived in Raipur on Tuesday to take part in the tournament. Maduka Dulanjana the former Ananda College shuttler and former Dharmasoka Ambalangoda Shuttler Lahiru Weerasinghe are both expected to compete in the men’s doubles events. Maduka faced a loss to Indian player Sarath Dunna (13/21 and 16/32) in the men’s singles qualifying round yesterday. Viren, Maduka and Lahiru had successful training sessions yesterday in preparation for their matches.
