Jaffna Hindu College’s P Yanakan and Esandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College emerged as the champions in the Under-15 Open Titles of the National Youth Chess Championship. The tournament, organized by the Sri Lanka Chess Federation, held from December 27 to 30 at Dharmapala Vidyalaya Pannipitiya.
In a competitive Boys Under-15 Open category, Jaffna Hindu College’s Yanakan faced off against 317 participants over nine
intense rounds. With an impressive score of 7.5/9 points, Yanakan secured the championship. The first runner-up position was claimed by Sethun Neththaru Manuwarana of Nalanda College, while PL Liyanage of Dharmaraja College secured the second runner-up spot.
Meanwhile, in the Girls Under-15 Open category, Dharmasoka College’s Esandi Newansa emerged victorious over 155 participants in eight rounds. Newansa secured the title with a commendable score of 7/8 points. The first runner-up position was clinched by Oneli Vithanawasam of Lyceum International School Wattala, and Nemindi Ramanayake of Bandaranaike Central College Gampaha secured the second runner-up spot with a superior tiebreak.
The tournament brought together the best young chess players from schools across the country, spanning age categories from Under-7 to Under-19 for both girls and boys.
